There’s a picture of Princess Diana and Michael Jackson that has always stuck in my mind. At first sight, it looks like just a snapshot of two famous people, but if you dive deeper, you’ll discover that their story is so much richer and more interesting.
Did you know that there was more to their relationship than just a brief encounter? Both Princess Diana and Michael Jackson are legendary figures, and their fame needs no introduction, right?
It was almost destined that these two larger-than-life personalities would cross paths, but few could have predicted the bond they would form beyond friendly conversation.
A Rare Meeting
In fact, Diana and Michael only met in person once! Diana, often called “The People’s Princess,” was a huge music fan. She adored pop music, especially the band Duran Duran, and was known to play Michael Jackson’s albums like Thriller and Bad on repeat.
This love for music brought them together on July 16, 1988. That day, Diana and her husband, Prince Charles, attended Michael Jackson’s concert during his Bad tour at Wembley Stadium. This was a monumental event—it marked both their first and last meeting.
Michael reflected on that special day a few years later during an interview with Barbara Walters in 1997, saying, “She told me she was honored to meet me.” Can you imagine how excited he must have felt? But a wave of nervousness washed over him as well.
The two appeared a bit awkward in the photos, and there was a unique reason for that. In a move of respect, Michael had decided to remove his song “Dirty Diana” from the concert playlist. He thought it might be too inappropriate to perform with a royal in attendance.
“I took it out of the show in honor of Her Royal Highness,” Michael explained. However, Diana had a different idea! During their meet-and-greet before the show, she asked him if he would perform the song, insisting that he go ahead. Ultimately, he did perform “Dirty Diana,” much to the delight of the audience.
A Deep Connection
From that moment on, a powerful connection blossomed between Michael and Diana. “We were very close,” he recalled later in an interview, revealing that their friendship continued through late-night phone calls. “She was extremely close by phone… I was still married to Lisa Marie [Presley].
Diana woke me up usually late at night… mostly after three in the morning! And then she held me for hours on the telephone.” Michael described these calls as times when they confided in each other about their struggles and shared experiences.
However, some of Diana’s friends disputed this. They mentioned that Michael probably never had her private number, and staff at Kensington Palace were instructed not to connect him to the princess. Still, one thing was clear: they were both passionate about various humanitarian causes, which brought them closer together.
When they met, Michael had already donated over $300,000 to charities that helped children. Diana admired his work and shared his commitment to making the world a better place.
It was a friendship built on mutual respect and understanding, as they both faced similar pressures from the media. They were true icons—sometimes overwhelmed by the spotlight but united in their desire to make a difference.
Was There More to Their Friendship?
There were even whispers that Michael might have had deeper feelings for Diana. His former bodyguard, Matt Fiddes, claimed that Jackson was “in love” with her, noting, “He felt she was the only person in the world who could understand his life in terms of not being able to go anywhere, and the media stories that got out of hand.”
He added that both of them lived under constant scrutiny, making their bond even more special.
But in the summer of 1997, tragedy struck when Princess Diana passed away in a car accident. Michael was heartbroken. According to reports, he fainted upon hearing the news and needed smelling salts to revive him.
The pain was so intense that he postponed a concert in Belgium, saying he couldn’t bear to perform that night because he was deeply saddened by her death.
In a poignant twist, Diana had died just two days after Michael’s own 39th birthday. Upon returning to the stage, he paid tribute to her, saying, “In my heart, I was saying, ‘I love you, Diana. Shine. And shine on forever, because you are the true princess of the people.’” His words showed how much he cared and how deeply the loss affected him.
Honoring a Friend
Although Michael didn’t attend Diana’s funeral, he showed his love and respect by attending a memorial service in Los Angeles. Wearing black and a black fedora, he approached the service surrounded by his bodyguards. He told reporters, “I wanted to be there to honor my friend who is no longer here… I love her.”
As time went on, Michael frequently spoke fondly about Diana. In 2003, he described her as “one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known,” revealing their unique connection and how they could relate to one another. “We shared something in common, with the press.
I don’t think they hounded anyone more than her and myself. And we had a relationship, where we would call each other late at night… just cry on each other’s shoulders about how hard and difficult and how mean the tabloids can be.”
In the end, it’s both fascinating and bittersweet to watch moments of Diana and Michael together. Their bond was special and unique, wrapped in friendship, mutual admiration, and shared struggles against the media.
Their only meeting turned out to be historic, even if the photographer capturing that moment didn’t realize its importance at the time. That single snapshot symbolizes the beginning of a profound friendship that was touched by love, compassion, and understanding.
