Some comedic matchups are so legendary that just thinking about them brings a smile to your face. While the TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” let us enjoy the quick wit of people like Colin Mochrie and Wayne Brady, there are moments in comedy history that are pure gold. This video features a moment like that—where three comedy icons and one music legend come together for a truly memorable sketch.
The scene kicks off with Ted Knight chatting with Dean Martin in a bar. Knight, known for playing the pompous Ted Baxter, ironically discusses how difficult it is to portray such a character, all while pulling out a mirror and admiring himself. Then, in walks Tim Conway, playing a drunken character, who stumbles over to Martin and begins bombarding him with awkward questions about Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. before eventually wandering off.
If anyone had a knack for deflating egos, it was Tim Conway. He was notorious for trying to make Harvey Korman break character on “The Carol Burnett Show,” and he succeeded more often than not. Ted Knight, being more accustomed to a structured performance, and Dean Martin, always ready to laugh at anything Conway said, were the perfect audience for his antics.
It’s bittersweet that both Knight and Martin are no longer with us, but this clip captures them in their prime, unafraid to poke fun at themselves. Dean Martin, in particular, made a career out of self-deprecating humor, which served him well throughout his life. Ted Knight also loved playing the egotist, as seen in movies like “Caddyshack,” where his portrayal of Judge Smails nearly stole the show from comedy greats like Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield. What a fantastic trio we have in this sketch. (Fun fact: Ted Knight served in WWII and earned more than one Silver Star. Truly an incredible person.)
Who’s your favorite among these three legends? Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for Tim Conway. How about you? Don’t hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments. And while you’re at it, give us a “Like” on Facebook and spread the laughter by sharing this video with a friend!
